Free LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP presented by Frank Melton, Horticulturist and Master
Gardner, on March 31 from 9 to 10:30am at the Tomorrow Center, 1133 Adams St,

CHAPTER YARD AND BAKE SALE Friday, April 6 from 7am to 1pm with rain date on
April 7. This is our Chapter’s major fund raiser for this year. We need your
stuff/baked goods and your volunteer time! Contact Bob Parson, 782-3904, for
either or all. The sale will be at Bob and Ann Parson’s home at 928 Memphis
Junction Rd.
WORK RESOURCE WORKSHOP presented by Patrice Blanchard, Associate Director of
Kentucky AARP. See Flyer attached to this newsletter. You may not be looking for
work but someone you know may be. Workshop will be April 14 from 9am to 12 noon
at the Tomorrow Center, 1133 Adams St, Bowling Green. RSVP to Donna Woods,
782-7329.
“DIVIDED WE FAIL” ADVOCACY TRAINING WORKSHOP for all persons interested in
state and national advocacy issues. Workshop will be April 26 from 9am to 12
noon at the Tomorrow Center, 1133 Adams St, Bowling Green. Contact Jeane

NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE is a day that Chapters all over the United States
participate in a volunteer activity of their choosing. This year the NDOS will
be on May 10. Our President Elect, Pat Kisling, has been working on the details
of our NDOS at Hopkins Nursing Home in Auburn, KY. Contact Pat, 303-2345, if you
would enjoy participating in this special day.
WHERE WE’VE BEEN AND WHAT WE’VE DONE
The FRANKFORT LEGISLATIVE TRIP
, February 22, was a huge success! Thank you to Frank Melton, Advocacy Chair,
for all his hard work in organizing the trip and keeping us on schedule. Those
attending were Genny Cornell, Bill and Glenda Cravens, Bob Eudy, Pat Kisling,
Frank and Marcy Melton, Bob Parson, Edwin Phelps and Elease South, Jeane
Robertson, Mariah Roddy, Barbara Strande, Carolyn Tarrence, Collins Vance, and
Donna Woods.
Our CHAPTER HEADQUARTER OPEN HOUSE on February 23 was an opportunity for our
members to see what is available at our “spot” at the Tomorrow Center at
1133 Adams St. This Center will make it possible for our local chapter and the
state AARP office to conduct workshops and other educational offerings.
Free TAXAIDE services continue through April 13 Monday-Thursday 9am to 2pm at
the Tomorrow Center, 1133 Adams St. Our chapter members who are volunteering for
this service are Bob Parson, Earline Harrison, Mabel Howlett, Rico Abreu, and
Wanda Lowry.
A GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP sponsored by the Alive Center was attended on February
27 by Bob Parson and Donna Woods as AARP representatives.
Our chapter filled a table at the February 28 WOMEN’S LUNCHEON sponsored by
the Medical Center. Those attending were Betty Crayton, B.J. McKinze, Ann
Parson, Frances Porter, Jeane Robertson, Carol Smock, and Barbara Strande.
Also on February 28, Bob and Ann Parson, Pat Kisling, and Frank Melton met with
MAYOR ELAINE WALKER to acquaint her with our chapter, future activities and our
interest in matters relating to persons age 50+.
Several area organizations attended an AARP sponsored WORK RESOURCE LUNCHEON on
March 1 to begin collecting information for a Work Resource booklet. The booklet
will contain specific information about organizations with services available
for persons 50+ who are seeking work or a career change.
A WBKO INTERVIEW was done for a “spot” on the March 7 night newscast. Pat
Kisling and Donna Woods were interviewed by reporter, Fida Georges, and footage
was shown of our office and facilities at the Tomorrow Center.
Our chapter was well represented at the KENTUCKY AARP ADVOCACY LUNCHEON March
13. Attending were Bob and Ann Parson, Pat Kisling, Jeane Robertson, Frank
Melton, Mariah Roddy, and Garth Griese.
A VERY SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Edwin Phelps and Elease South will joyfully marry on Saturday April 28 in a
private ceremony. All friends and relatives are invited to the reception from
4:30 to 7pm at Fairview Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, 1150 Fairview Ave.
The couple requests no gifts—only the happiness of your presence.
CHAPTER ANNOUNCEMENTS
If you know of a senior person or a senior couple who might enjoy a GIFT BASKET
sponsored by our chapter and the Tomorrow Center, contact Bob Parson, 782-3904.
The basket contains nonperishable food goods.
DRIVER SAFETY CLASS will be held March 20-21 from 9am to 1pm at the Wellness
Center at the Greenwood Mall. Any person age 50+ is eligible--fee is $10. Often
car insurance discounts are available after completion of classes. Call 745-0942
to register.
2007 MEMBERSHIP DUES ARE DUE NOW. National AARP membership is required for
chapter membership. See Treasurer Bob Eudy for a national membership form if
needed. See Alicia McClure to pay chapter membership dues.
Membership NAME TAGS are at the registration desk monthly. It is your
responsibility to return your name tag to it’s envelop.
Our SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS BOX is located on the “drinks counter”. The Board
is eager to have your input regarding anything involving our chapter. You do not
have to sign your suggestion or comment. All comments will be taken to the full
Board for discussion.
COMMUNITY NEWS
We have a very active Veterans
community in Warren County. Please contact Edwin Phelps, 842-6451, for
information regarding events and services available.
A group of volunteers get together every Saturday to prepare and deliver meals
to low income seniors who would otherwise not be fed. Contact Jude Gann,
846-0301, if you or your church/organization may be interested in volunteering
to help with the MEAL’S program. Our members, Bob and Ann Parson volunteered
one Saturday in February.
The RSVP( Retired and Senior Volunteers Program) is a volunteer program
sponsored by Community Action. Persons 55+ who are interested should contact
Lynda Hilfer, RSVP Volunteer Recruiter, at 783-4484. Our members, Hope Scantlin
and Jay Stine are active RSVP volunteers.
Bowling Green Public Transit System, GO, has 4 routes available. The rates are
very reasonable with special discounts for seniors. Watch the newspaper for
“free ride” days. Call 782-3162 for more information and have a route map
sent to you. A few route maps are available today at our registration desk.
HEALTH NEWS
A Shingles Vaccine is now available. Qualifications for the vaccine are: age
60+, history of chicken pox, never had shingles. Insurances and medicare do not
cover the vaccine cost. If you have ever seen someone suffer with shingle pain
during the outbreak and often suffer with pain for months and years afterwards,
you will consider getting the vaccine as money well invested.
Employment opportunity
Kelly Services, 842-2906, 1256 Campbell Ln, Bowling Green, has several positions
for AFNI Customer Service Center. Information regarding job: part time 20 to 23
hrs a wk, 5 to 9pm, $9 an hr, training provided. Contact Kelly Services for
application and interview. Kelly Services is a member of the AARP National
Employers Team Program. Employers who participate in this AARP program have gone
through a credentialing process to be listed as a good work source for persons
age 50+. Information about job search opportunities and assistance can be found
